The purpose of the Alliance is to manage solid waste and recycling generated within the Alliance, in conformance with the Alliance&#8217;s Solid Waste Implementation Plan (referred to as the \u201cSWIP\u201d). The <a href=\"https:\/\/mtalliance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Signed-Mountain-Alliance-2025-SWIP.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SWIP<\/a> is a plan that outlines how the Alliance will meet the requirements of the State of Vermont&#8217;s Materials Management Plan (MMP). Flood-damaged recyclables or food waste can be thrown away in the trash.<br>The cleanup of paint, chemicals, oil, gas, pesticides, and other hazardous materials in flood-damaged basements and properties needs special care. To protect solid waste workers and the environment, it is critical that residents, businesses, contractors, and cleanup crews separate these hazardous items from trash.<br><strong>Keep these items separate from trash:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dangerous wastes such as toxics, pesticides, explosives, gasoline, oil, pool chemicals, acids, drain cleaner, fireworks, flares, ammo, and unprotected \u201csharps\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oil, brake cleaner, other toxic car products<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paint, stain, varnish, paint thinner\/stripper<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Propane cylinders, other gas cylinders<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hazardous Waste<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Batteries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Electronics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mercury products such as fluorescent bulbs, thermostats, and thermometers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tires<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scrap metal and large appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, stoves, washers, and dryers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Household hazardous waste collection services may be available from Solid Waste Management Entities (SWME). Learn more by contacting your SWME at 802recycles.com. Services vary, but some of these items may be accepted at your local transfer station.<br><strong>Other Tips:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Be safe! Use gloves and eye protection.
